Frequently Asked Questions for Microneedling
What is Microneedling?
Microneedling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) allows for a controlled process of the skin’s self-repair mechanism by creating micro “injuries” in the skin, which triggers new collagen production. Micro-needling is utilized to treat the appearance of fine lines, acne scars, minor trauma scars, hypo/hyperpigmentation, and improving the skin’s overall appearance.
How long does an appointment for Microneedling take?
Microneedling sessions are booked as 60 minute appointments, though the actual time may take 30 to 45 minutes.
How is Microneedling administered?
Microneedling procedures are performed in a safe and precise manner with the use of a sterile micropen needle head and handheld micropen skin needling system. The micropen is gently pressed into the skin, and glides across the its’ surface to induce new collagen and elastin.
Does Microneedling hurt?
Microneedling has been described as feeling like a vibration that is slightly scratchy and tolerable. You may feel similar to a sunburn after. For very sensitive patients a numbing cream may be applied. Areas with deeper imperfections may cause more discomfort than areas with superficial imperfections.
When will I begin to see results from my Microneedling treatment?
You may notice your skin looking fresher right away, but the full benefits develop over time as collagen and elastin continue to rebuild. For areas with deeper imperfections, results can be subtler, and additional treatments are usually required.
How long do results from Microneedling results last?
Improvements from microneedling can be seen for several years after treatment, and results can be prolonged with the correct at home skincare maintenance. Results are long lasting but not permanent, as skin naturally ages and is affected by external factors. Periodic treatments can help maintain improvements.
What areas can I treat with Microneedling?
Micro-needling can essentially be used on any part of the body. The most popular areas to treat are the face, neck, and chest. Micro-needling can also be effective on most types of scarring and stretch marks.
What’s the difference between microneedling and nano needling?
Microneedling uses small needles that gently engage the skin for renewal, there is a healing period of 2-3 weeks and 4-6 weeks scheduled in between sessions. Nano needling uses an ultra-fine, textured tip that stays more surface-level to focus on topical absorption with minimal sensation, sessions can be done weekly and is considered gentler for sensitive patients.
Is Microneedling the Same as Facial or Cosmetic Acupuncture?
Although both use small needles to stimulate the body’s natural healing responses, they are different procedures. Acupuncture involves individual needles placed at specific points to address cosmetic or medical concerns, while microneedling uses multiple needles in one tip to treat larger areas.
What is the after care post Microneedling session?
After your treatment, your skin may be red. This is normal and to be expected. Redness usually lasts from one to 24 hours. You may also have a little swelling in some areas and drier skin a few days later.
24-48 hours after your session you will want to:
avoid direct sunlight use mineral based sunblock
avoid excessive sweating
avoid wearing makeup
avoid facial cleansers
use water to moisten face and reapply serum
Are there any side effects or possible risks to Micro-needling?
